What is LinkedIn ads revenue tracking?
LinkedIn ads revenue tracking means each closed deal keeps the LinkedIn campaign that produced the lead, so you can add up won value by campaign. Campaign Manager's ROAS uses the conversion value you send it, not your invoices. Keep UTMs on the form and copy them onto the deal. Tools like Trakt record each form submission with its UTM source.
Quick start: Start free with Trakt to tag your LinkedIn ad links consistently and credit won deal value to the campaign captured at form submission. Or follow the manual steps below.
Sponsored click → Insight Tag or conversion event in Campaign Manager → UTMs on the form → CRM contact, then the deal → closed revenue by campaign.
Campaign Manager can report the first two once a conversion value is set. The invoice amount has to be written onto the deal, or sent back to LinkedIn as that value.

What LinkedIn counts as conversion value
LinkedIn's conversion tracking guide says a conversion is an action you associate with your ad sets, so Campaign Manager can measure return on ad spend. You pick a data source, create the conversion, set a value, set a window, choose an attribution model, and associate the conversion with ad sets. The guide is Get started with LinkedIn Conversion Tracking.
LinkedIn documents four sources:
| Source | What LinkedIn says it carries | Refresh |
|---|---|---|
| Insight Tag | Online actions on your website. Browser JavaScript. | Continuous |
| Conversions API | Online and offline actions, server to server. | Continuous, or on a schedule |
| CRM Sync | Offline actions through a CRM connected in Business Manager. LinkedIn lists qualified leads, pipeline, opportunities, and close-won deals as the fit, and auto-creates conversions from Leads, Qualified Leads, and Contacts. | Continuous |
| CSV upload | Online and offline actions you upload yourself. | Whenever you upload a new file |
The Insight Tag is the website tag. LinkedIn's install steps: in Campaign Manager open Measure, then Signals manager, then Insight Tag, then I will install the tag myself. Copy the code, using straight quotation marks, and add it before the closing body tag, preferably in the global footer. You can also send the tag to a developer or use a tag manager. After a page on your domain loads, LinkedIn says validation can take a few minutes to 24 hours. The full steps are Add the LinkedIn Insight Tag to your website.
LinkedIn says the Insight Tag should stay off pages that collect sensitive data, including some consumer health and financial pages. That note is on the same install article. It is a placement rule, and your own counsel is the one who applies it.
A conversion value is what turns a conversion count into ROAS. LinkedIn's Conversions API best-practices article says to send either the same static value on every conversion or a dynamic value for that conversion, so you can see return on investment and not only a count. The default window it recommends for most conversions is 90-day click and 90-day view. With the Conversions API you can also set 1, 7, or 30 days, and for some categories, including Purchase and qualified-lead types, 180 or 365 days. Read the current list on Conversions API setup best practices before you pick a window.
LinkedIn deduplicates the Insight Tag and the Conversions API when both send the same event ID. Its developer docs say that when both arrive, the Insight Tag event is the one that counts. You create a conversion rule for each source.
How to track LinkedIn ads revenue
Five steps. The first three make Campaign Manager's ROAS real. The last two make the CRM report, which is the one you spend against.
1. Install the Insight Tag
Follow the Signals manager path above and confirm the domain validates. The tag is what LinkedIn uses for website actions and for website retargeting. It records an on-site action. A deal that closes in the CRM three months later is outside that tag.
2. Create a conversion, set a value, and attach it to the ad sets
In Campaign Manager, create the conversion from the source you chose. LinkedIn's guide asks you to set four rules:
- The customer activity, from LinkedIn's conversion event types.
- The value, static or dynamic.
- The window, such as the default 90-day view and 90-day click.
- The attribution model. LinkedIn lets you credit every ad set that had an interaction inside the window, or credit only the most recent one.
Then associate the conversion with the ad sets. LinkedIn's guide asks you to confirm the status is Active and that the conversion is on the ad sets.
3. Send closed-deal value back if you want Campaign Manager ROAS to use it
Pick the source that matches the volume.
- CRM Sync, connected in Business Manager, is the source LinkedIn points at pipeline and close-won. LinkedIn auto-creates conversions from Leads, Qualified Leads, and Contacts once the CRM data is available. Read that as LinkedIn's rule, and check which objects your CRM connection actually shares before you treat the column as booked revenue.
- Conversions API sends online and offline actions from your server, including a value on each event. LinkedIn's best-practices note asks for real-time events, a value, and a window that covers the sales cycle.
- CSV upload is the manual file. LinkedIn describes it as the fit for lower volumes you send less often. Matching depends on the identifiers in the file, and the report moves when you upload, not when the deal closes.
After events match to LinkedIn members, add the Conversions & Leads columns. LinkedIn's developer guide places that column set on the Campaigns, Campaign Groups, and Ads tabs. The metrics LinkedIn names there are conversion rate, cost per conversion, and return on ad spend. A status of Low Match Rate on the conversion rule means the identifiers you sent are a weak match to member profiles.
4. Keep the campaign on the lead with UTMs
Campaign Manager's ROAS still lives inside Campaign Manager. The CRM needs its own copy of the campaign. Put URL parameters on the ad so the landing page carries utm_source=linkedin and the campaign name. The parameter table, including the ad-set macro names LinkedIn requires on new ad sets, is in LinkedIn UTM parameters.
A Lead Gen Form never lands on your site, so a destination URL parameter never rides along. Map the campaign inside the form. Why LinkedIn Lead Gen Form leads show up as unknown is that case.
5. Copy the campaign from the contact to the deal, then sum won value
Hidden fields are the manual way to get UTMs onto the submission. Why UTM data disappears at form submission is the usual break: the URL has the parameters, and the form posts name and email only.
The contact is still one step short of revenue. When sales creates the deal, copy the campaign field across. Why the CRM lead source gets overwritten is the later break, when a new touch replaces the original LinkedIn campaign. Closed-loop attribution is the full path from the click to the closed deal.
With the campaign on the deal, run a closed-won report grouped by that field. Use the closed date, and wait one full sales cycle before you cut an ad set.
The figures below are made up. They show why a lead count and a revenue total rank campaigns differently.
| Campaign | Leads | Closed revenue |
|---|---|---|
| cfo-webinar | 6 | $42,000 |
| demo-retargeting | 14 | $9,000 |
Illustrative numbers, not Trakt customer data.
Campaign Manager, optimizing for lead conversions, ranks demo-retargeting first. The closed-won report ranks cfo-webinar first. Spend against the second table.
If you want the LinkedIn campaign recorded on each form submission without adding hidden fields, pre-register for Trakt.
What Trakt stores on a LinkedIn click
Trakt stores the UTMs from the latest tagged visit in a first-party cookie for 90 days. A return in the same browser, with no new tags, keeps that campaign. A later click with its own UTMs replaces them.
On submit, Trakt records the submission with that source attached, including when the form has no hidden fields. Won deal value is credited to utm_source on Trakt's dashboard. A report of revenue by LinkedIn campaign inside your own CRM still needs the hidden field and the contact-to-deal copy.
The Insight Tag, the conversion rule, and any upload back to Campaign Manager stay in LinkedIn. HubSpot, Salesforce, and Pipedrive stay your CRM's own mapping.
Pre-register for Trakt when you want the 90-day cookie and the submission record without adding the fields by hand.
Frequently asked questions
How do I track LinkedIn ads revenue?
Keep the LinkedIn campaign on the closed deal and sum won value by that field. In Campaign Manager, install the Insight Tag, create a conversion, set a static or dynamic value, and associate it with the ad sets. That gives Campaign Manager a ROAS from the value you send. Separately, put UTMs on the ad URL, store them on the form submission, and copy them from the contact to the deal. The CRM total is the number you use for budget.
Does the LinkedIn Insight Tag show closed revenue?
The Insight Tag records online actions on your website, such as a form fill, and reports them to Campaign Manager. A deal that closes later in the CRM is an offline action. LinkedIn's sources for that are the Conversions API, CRM Sync, and a CSV upload, each with a conversion value. Set the value to the deal amount if you want Campaign Manager ROAS to follow revenue. The tag install alone leaves that column as a count of on-site actions.
What LinkedIn conversion window should I use for a long sales cycle?
LinkedIn's default recommendation for most conversions is a 90-day click window and a 90-day view window. The Conversions API also allows 1, 7, and 30 days, and for some categories, including Purchase and qualified-lead types, 180 or 365 days. Match the window to the time between the click and the closed deal. A 30-day window on a six-month sale will drop the deal before it closes. Confirm the categories on LinkedIn's conversion-window help before you set 180 or 365.
Why does LinkedIn revenue show up as a website form in the CRM?
The CRM stored the form name and lost the campaign. A destination URL with no UTMs, a form with no field for those UTMs, or a deal that never inherited the contact field all end at the same place: the source says Website Form. Add the URL parameters in Campaign Manager, write them onto the submission, and copy them onto the deal. Lead Gen Forms skip the landing page, so those leads need the campaign mapped on the form itself.
