What are YouTube retargeting ads?

YouTube retargeting ads are video ads shown to people who already watched your videos, visited your site or are on a customer list. Build the list in Google Ads, attach it to a YouTube campaign, and add a UTM suffix that names the list. Tools like Trakt record each form submission with its UTMs.

Quick start: Start free with Trakt to tag each retargeting list's links consistently and record every form submission with its source. Or follow the manual steps below.

Four steps:

  1. Build the list from YouTube viewers, from site visitors, or from customers. These are different people.
  2. Add that list to a campaign that serves on YouTube.
  3. Paste a final URL suffix with utm_medium=retargeting_video and the audience name in utm_campaign.
  4. Store those values on the form. Read revenue from deals that still carry them.

The suffix itself is the YouTube UTM template. Organic clicks, which are not ads, are YouTube website traffic.

How to set up a YouTube viewers list

Google's path is in Expand your reach to YouTube users.

  1. Link the YouTube channel to the Google Ads account. The list is built from that channel.
  2. Open Tools, then Shared library, then Audience manager.
  3. Choose the plus button, then YouTube users.
  4. Pick the action: viewed any video from the channel, viewed certain videos, subscribed, visited the channel page, liked a video, or added a video to a playlist.

Two limits on that page change the creative:

  • A view has to reach 10 seconds to qualify for the list.
  • Bumper ads and non-skippable in-stream ads do not add people. Google also says video ads should be at least 11 seconds to add people to these lists.

Someone who bounced a 6-second bumper is not in the list. A 15-second skippable view can be. If the list stays empty, check the ad length before you check the tracking.

Lists are per channel. Linking a second channel does not copy the first channel's list onto it.

A website list is a different audience: people who hit your site, including pricing or a demo page, whether or not they watched a video. It comes from the Google tag or from a GA4 audience shared to Google Ads. Use it when the ad should talk about the page they opened.

A customer list is a third audience. Customer Match uses data you upload. Use it for people who already bought or booked, and keep that suffix different from the viewer list. Otherwise expansion and retention land on the same row.

Put the list on a YouTube campaign

Demand Gen campaigns can serve on YouTube, including Shorts, and also on Discover, Gmail, and the Display Network. Video campaigns can also target your data, including YouTube users, site visitors, and Customer Match. Google documents those audiences under targeting for Video campaigns.

Use the campaign type the account already uses for YouTube. Then:

  1. Create the campaign, or open the existing one, and set the landing page to the offer that matches the list. Pricing viewers go to pricing. Demo viewers go to the demo page.
  2. Add the list under your data. Leave cold targeting off that campaign so the spend is actually retargeting.
  3. In the prospecting campaign, exclude this list if you want new viewers and returning viewers in separate budgets. If one person can still see both, the suffix below is what tells the lead which click they took.
  4. Write the ad for the action they already took. A viewer of a product demo does not need the intro again.

Google will not serve a list that is too small to use. The help page for the list type is the place to check the current minimum. An empty or ineligible list is a setup problem, not a sign that YouTube retargeting ads "do not work."

Tag the audience so the deal shows it

Paste this into Final URL suffix on the retargeting campaign. Example names, not a live account. Replace pricing-viewers with the audience you built.

utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=retargeting_video&utm_campaign=pricing-viewers&utm_content={creative}

{creative} is a ValueTrack parameter. Google replaces it with the ad id on the click.

Prospecting uses the same source and a different medium:

utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=paid_video&utm_campaign=product-launch-2026&utm_content={creative}

Open the campaign, then Settings, Additional settings, Campaign URL options, and paste the suffix. Leave the final URL clean. How the two fields differ is in YouTube UTM parameters.

One suffix for every retargeting ad in the account hides the audience. pricing-viewers and all-viewers have to be different utm_campaign values, or the report cannot say which list is on the revenue.

Click the ad from a test setup, or use Google's URL test, and confirm the landing page contains retargeting_video and the audience name.

If you want the audience name recorded on each form submission without adding hidden fields, pre-register for Trakt.

What a retargeting click is worth

A view of the ad is not a lead. A conversion counted inside Google Ads is not a closed deal. The revenue number is closed deals whose lead still has utm_medium=retargeting_video.

The path from the click to that field:

  1. The suffix is on the landing page URL.
  2. The site writes it to a first-party cookie on that browser.
  3. Hidden fields on the form submit it with the lead.
  4. The CRM keeps those values. A later visit can be stored as well. It should not wipe the audience off the original fields.

The cookie stays on the browser that clicked. Someone who sees the ad on a phone and buys on a laptop has no cookie on the laptop. YouTube device tracking covers that gap. Is YouTube promotion worth it is the prospecting side, pre-roll and sponsorships. YouTube ROI is how to read the channel once several surfaces are tagged.

Example, not a customer result. Made-up leads and revenue, so you can see which column matters.

Audience (example)utm_campaignLeads (example)Closed revenue (example)
Pricing page visitorspricing-viewers8$24,000
Anyone who watchedall-viewers30$4,000
Customers, uploaded listcustomers5$15,000

In the example, "anyone who watched" produces the most leads and the least revenue. A campaign optimized on leads would fund that list. A campaign read on closed revenue would fund pricing viewers and customers. The suffix is what makes those three rows exist.

Trakt's tracking snippet writes source, medium, campaign, content, and term onto the form at submit, and stores them in a first-party cookie on that browser for 90 days. The form scanner picks up forms already on the site. Won deal value in Trakt's pipeline is credited to the source on the submission. The CRM still needs those fields mapped if sales works there. Pre-register for Trakt, or see how forms carry a source.

The checklist this sits inside is the YouTube attribution playbook. A Community post is not a retargeting ad. Tag those separately in YouTube Community post tracking.

Questions about YouTube retargeting ads

What are YouTube retargeting ads?

YouTube retargeting ads are video ads shown to people who already watched your channel, visited your site, or are on a customer list you uploaded. Build the list in Google Ads, add it to a YouTube or Demand Gen campaign, and put the audience name in the UTM suffix so a closed deal can show which list was involved.

How do I retarget website visitors on YouTube?

Build a website list from the Google tag or from a GA4 audience, share it to Google Ads, and add it as your data on a campaign that serves on YouTube. Use a suffix with utm_medium=retargeting_video and a campaign name for that list, such as pricing-viewers. A YouTube viewers list is a different group: people who watched, even if they never reached your site.

Which UTMs should YouTube retargeting ads use?

Use utm_source=youtube, utm_medium=retargeting_video, utm_campaign set to the audience name, and utm_content set to the creative id. Prospecting ads should use utm_medium=paid_video so the two budgets do not land on one row.

Why is my YouTube remarketing list not filling?

YouTube's own rules leave a lot of views out. The view has to reach 10 seconds. Bumper ads and non-skippable in-stream ads do not add people, and Google says the video ad should be at least 11 seconds. The channel also has to be linked to the Google Ads account, and the list belongs to that channel only.

How do I see revenue from YouTube retargeting?

Store the suffix on the lead: a first-party cookie on the browser that clicked, hidden fields on the form, and CRM properties that keep the original values. Then filter closed deals to utm_medium=retargeting_video and group them by utm_campaign. Views and in-account conversions are a different report.
