TikTok UTM parameters are the tags on an ad's destination URL that name the click: source, medium, campaign, ad group, and creative. A TikTok click tracking URL is that same address after someone taps the ad. It carries your parameters, and TikTok appends its own click id, ttclid.

Put TikTok's macros in once. TikTok fills the campaign and creative on every click. The revenue step is the form. If the form does not store those values, the CRM records the lead as Website and the ad spend has no deal attached to it.

Ad click → URL with your UTMs and TikTok's ttclid → form stores the UTMs → CRM source → closed revenue by campaign and creative.

What should TikTok UTM parameters contain?

TikTok UTM parameters should set utm_source=tiktok, a consistent utm_medium such as paid-social, and use TikTok's macros to fill utm_campaign and utm_content with the campaign and ad names. Add them in the URL parameters field in Ads Manager, keep values lowercase, and make sure your forms store them. Tools like Trakt build consistent UTM links.

Quick start: Start free with Trakt to build TikTok UTM links that follow one naming convention and record each form submission with its source. Or follow the manual steps below.

TikTok's UTM parameters article (updated February 2026) lists five parameters. The values below are the ones to standardise on. TikTok's own examples use lowercase tiktok.

ParameterValue to useWhat you can report
utm_sourcetiktokThe platform. One spelling, on ads and on organic posts.
utm_mediumpaid on ads. social on a bio or a share link. spark on a boosted creator post. qr on a printed code.Paid clicks versus posts, boosts, and scans.
utm_campaignThe campaign name, or the macro __CAMPAIGN_NAME__ on ads.Which effort produced the lead.
utm_termThe ad group name, or __AID_NAME__ on ads. TikTok's article says this slot can hold an ad group name or targeting note.Which audience the click came from.
utm_contentThe creative id, __CID__, on ads. A video or creator handle on a link you paste yourself.Which video or creator is on the lead.

tiktok and TikTok are two sources in analytics. paid and Paid are two mediums. Pick lowercase and use it on every TikTok link, including the ones in Spark Ads, QR codes, and posts people share in DMs.

An illustrative ad URL, with example names rather than a live campaign:

https://example.com/demo?utm_source=tiktok&utm_medium=paid&utm_campaign=spring-demo&utm_term=lookalike-founders&utm_content=product-demo

Everything after the ? is the tracking. Parameters join with &. A space, a #, or a second ? breaks the string. TikTok's article also says anything after a # is dropped.

What is a TikTok click tracking URL?

A TikTok click tracking URL is the landing page address as it looks after the tap. Two different systems write on it.

Your UTMs name the campaign for your analytics and your CRM. TikTok writes ttclid itself. TikTok's click id article (updated September 2025) shows the shape: a landing page such as http://demo.mywebsite.com?a=b becomes http://demo.mywebsite.com?a=b&ttclid=_CLICKID_. The click id does not replace your parameters. TikTok says click-id attachment leaves other tracking parameters in place.

ttclid is how TikTok's pixel and Events API match the visit back to the ad. Your CRM still needs the UTMs if you want the campaign name on the lead. A redirect that drops the query string drops both.

Illustrative click URL. The ttclid value is a placeholder, shortened, and not a real click id:

https://example.com/demo?utm_source=tiktok&utm_medium=paid&utm_campaign=spring-demo&utm_content=1847293000000000000&ttclid=_CLICKID_

Preview the ad in Ads Manager and read the address bar before you spend. The preview is where you confirm the macros and the click id are both present.

TikTok URL parameter macros

Macros are placeholders TikTok replaces when someone clicks. You maintain one URL pattern. TikTok fills the campaign, ad group, creative, and placement from the ad that served. The list below is the set in TikTok's UTM article (February 2026). Copy the macros in capitals, with two underscores on each side, the way that article writes them.

MacroExpands to
__CAMPAIGN_NAME__Campaign name
__CAMPAIGN_ID__Campaign id
__AID_NAME__Ad group name
__AID__Ad group id
__ADID_V2_NAME__Upgraded Smart+ campaigns: name of the ad (the bundle of creatives)
__ADID_V2__Upgraded Smart+ campaigns: ad id
__CID_NAME__Creative name
__CID__Creative id
__PLACEMENT__Placement (TikTok's article names TikTok and TikTok Pangle)

Smart+ campaigns use __ADID_V2__ and __ADID_V2_NAME__ for the ad, and still use __CID__ for the individual creative. TikTok's Smart+ reporting article is the reference when the campaign is the upgraded Smart+ type.

Ids stay stable when someone renames a campaign in Ads Manager. Names are readable in a CRM and break if the name contains a space or an ampersand. Name campaigns with lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens before you drop __CAMPAIGN_NAME__ into a URL.

A pattern to paste into Ads Manager's URL parameters. No leading ?. This mapping is ours: TikTok supplies the macros, and the parameter each one sits on is your choice.

utm_source=tiktok&utm_medium=paid&utm_campaign=__CAMPAIGN_NAME__&utm_term=__AID_NAME__&utm_content=__CID__

Macros expand on ad clicks. A link you paste into a bio, a comment, or a QR code needs the real values typed out. __CAMPAIGN_NAME__ left in a bio link stays as the placeholder, and the lead arrives with that literal string as its campaign.

For one link at a time, use the UTM builder. For the account-wide names, the pattern above belongs in Ads Manager so every new ad inherits it.

How do you add TikTok URL parameters in Ads Manager?

TikTok's article on adding URL parameters (updated December 2025) is the click path:

  1. Open the ad and go to Ad details. Enter the destination URL with no parameters on it yet.
  2. Click Edit under Preview.
  3. Under URL, click Build URL parameters.
  4. Enter each UTM, or add your own under Custom parameters. The macro string above can go in those fields.
  5. Read the preview. This is the click tracking URL you are about to buy traffic for.
  6. Click Apply. You can edit the parameters later by editing the ad. Copying an ad copies the URL and the parameters with it.

Auto-attach is the other switch on that screen. TikTok's article says it fills campaign source (TikTok), medium ("Paid"), an id, and a name. Open the preview and read the spelling. If the rest of your reporting uses tiktok and paid, turn auto-attach off while you set those values yourself, then confirm the preview shows a single utm_source and a single utm_medium. Two copies of the same parameter leave analytics to pick one of them.

Autodetect scans the URL and lists parameters it already finds. Use it to catch a tag left over from an old link.

If you want the parameter values enforced in a builder rather than kept in a doc, pre-register for Trakt.

How do you keep the parameters on the lead?

The click URL is half the job. The form is the half that shows up in revenue.

  1. The landing page has to keep the query string. A redirect to a clean URL throws away the UTMs and the ttclid.
  2. The form submission has to include utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_content, and utm_term. Trakt forms ship with those fields plus an id. The tracking snippet fills them at submit. The form scanner adopts forms already on the site, so a new landing page does not start from a blank source.
  3. Submit a test lead from the ad preview before the campaign spends. The record should show the campaign and the creative. A lead that arrives with a blank source is a broken form, and the clicks after launch will look the same.
  4. Read revenue by campaign and creative, from the leads that carry those fields through to won deals. Clicks without a stored source cannot be tied to a deal later.

The wider setup, including the CRM fields, is in the TikTok attribution playbook and in how to connect TikTok to your CRM. When the lead shows up as Direct anyway, why leads show as direct is the checklist.

If you want the naming and the form fields in the product rather than in a doc, pre-register for Trakt. The form asks for a work email and sets up the workspace before the account exists.

Which TikTok UTM mistakes split revenue?

Source and medium swapped. Source is the platform, tiktok. Medium is the type of click, paid. A report that lists paid as a source cannot be compared with Google or with organic TikTok.

Mixed capitalisation. utm_source=TikTok and utm_source=tiktok are two rows. So are Paid and paid. Auto-attach's "Paid" is the case to check in the preview.

Macros on a link TikTok does not serve. Bio links, DM links, and QR codes need finished values. The macro table is for Ads Manager.

A campaign name the URL cannot carry. spring demo and spring&demo and spring#1 produce a broken or truncated click URL. Use spring-demo.

A second set of parameters. An old utm_source on the destination, plus auto-attach, plus a manual string, can put the same key on the URL twice. Start from a clean destination URL.

No test lead. Preview the ad, click it, read the address bar, submit the form, and open the lead. That is the check that the click still has a campaign when it becomes pipeline.

Questions

What are TikTok UTM parameters?

TikTok UTM parameters are tags on the ad destination URL: utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, and utm_content. They tell your analytics and your CRM which TikTok campaign and creative the click came from. TikTok documents the five parameters and the macros that fill them in its UTM help article.

What is a TikTok click tracking URL?

It is the landing page URL after the tap. Your UTM parameters are on it, and TikTok appends ttclid, the click id its pixel and Events API use to match the visit to the ad. The CRM report uses the UTMs. Keep both through any redirect.

Which TikTok URL macros should I use?

TikTok's February 2026 list is __CAMPAIGN_NAME__, __CAMPAIGN_ID__, __AID_NAME__, __AID__, __CID_NAME__, __CID__, __PLACEMENT__, and, for upgraded Smart+ campaigns, __ADID_V2__ and __ADID_V2_NAME__. A practical ads pattern is utm_campaign=__CAMPAIGN_NAME__, utm_term=__AID_NAME__, and utm_content=__CID__, with utm_source=tiktok and utm_medium=paid.

Should I turn on TikTok URL auto-attach?

Auto-attach adds a source, a medium, an id, and a name for you. TikTok's help text describes the source as TikTok and the medium as "Paid". If your other links use lowercase tiktok and paid, set those yourself and confirm the preview shows each parameter once. Read the preview either way.

Why does a TikTok lead show as Website in the CRM?

The click URL had the parameters, and the form submission did not. Add the five UTM fields to the form, or use a form that already stores them, then submit a test lead from the ad preview and check the record before you spend.
