A QR code for TikTok is a scannable code that opens a TikTok profile or a page you choose. TikTok's own profile code is for getting someone onto your account. It does not name a campaign, a video, or a booth.
When the scan has to show up on a lead, build the code from a URL you own, with UTM parameters already on it. The code stores that URL. A later change to the parameters means a new code. One code per creator, booth, or video is what lets you see which one closed.
Profile QR → opens the TikTok account. Tracked QR → opens your page with the campaign on the URL → form stores it → the scan can sit on a closed deal.
What is a QR code for TikTok?
A QR code for TikTok is either TikTok's own profile QR code, which opens your account in the app, or a QR code you make that opens a UTM-tagged page on your website. Only the second can be tied to leads and revenue, because the tags reach your forms. Tools like Trakt generate tagged links and QR codes.
Quick start: Start free with Trakt to generate a UTM-tagged link and QR code for each TikTok placement and record the form leads each one brings in. Or follow the manual steps below.
There are two codes people mean by "QR code for TikTok," and they answer different questions.
The profile code lives in the TikTok app. Someone scans it and lands on your profile. Use it on a slide, a badge, or a package when the next step is "follow" or "watch."
The tracked code encodes a link on your site. Someone scans it and lands on a demo, a signup, or an offer, and the link says which TikTok placement sent them. Use it when the next step is a lead you will follow up. The UTM schema for that link is the same one in TikTok UTM parameters.
A code pointed at a bare homepage, with no parameters, produces a visit your analytics will often file as direct. The scan happened. The campaign did not survive it.
How do you get TikTok's profile QR code?
TikTok's support article on sharing documents the profile code:
- In the TikTok app, tap Profile.
- Tap the Menu button at the top, then tap My QR code.
- Someone else scans it with their camera or with TikTok's in-app scanner.
That code opens the profile. It is the right asset when the goal is the account itself. It will not tell you which flyer, which creator, or which video produced a form fill. For that, build a code from a tagged URL.
How do you make a QR code for TikTok you can attribute?
Do this before you print, film, or send the code to a creator. The image is a picture of a URL. Editing the URL later does not update codes you already handed out.
- Choose a page you own. A demo, a signup, or a short offer. The page has to load on a phone. The form on it has to be able to store UTM parameters.
- Add the parameters first.
utm_source=tiktok,utm_medium=qr,utm_campaignfor the effort,utm_contentfor the specific code (the booth, the creator, the video). Build it in the UTM builder so the spelling matches your ads. - One code per thing you want to compare. A single code for a whole roadshow tells you the roadshow worked. A code per city tells you which city to repeat. The same rule covers creators and videos. Spark Ads tracking uses a separate link per creator for the same reason.
- Generate the image from the finished URL. Any generator that encodes the full address, query string included, is enough. In Trakt, a tagged link can be shortened and turned into a QR code, and a scan counts as a click. See campaigns. A short link is easier to read if someone has to type it. The redirect has to keep the query string. Scan it and read the address bar.
- Test on a phone, then submit the form. The lead should show
utm_medium=qrand theutm_contentfor that code. Check a second phone if you can. A code that fails this test will fail in the room.
Illustrative destination for a booth code. The names are examples:
https://example.com/demo?utm_source=tiktok&utm_medium=qr&utm_campaign=spring-demo&utm_content=booth-austin&utm_term=creator-ada
If that URL is long for a caption, wrap it. Open the short link from a phone and confirm the parameters are still on the final page before you print.
If you want the tagged link and the QR code for each placement built in one place, pre-register for Trakt.
QR code examples for TikTok
These rows are illustrative. Copy the structure, and replace the names with your own. They are not results from a campaign.
| Where the code is | Where it sends people | utm_medium | utm_content | What you learn |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok's profile QR, on a slide | Your TikTok profile | None. TikTok's code has no UTM slot. | None | Someone can open the account. You do not get a lead source. |
| End card filmed for an event | Your demo page | qr | booth-austin | Scans from that event's video, if they submit the form. |
| Card a creator holds on camera | Your demo page | qr | creator-ada | Which creator's code produced the lead. |
| Packaging or a one-pager | Your offer page | qr | insert-spring | Which physical piece was scanned. |
| A link in the caption, no code | Your demo page | social | video-spring-01 | Clicks, as opposed to scans. Different medium, same campaign. |
Use utm_medium=qr only on codes. A caption link that uses qr will make scans and taps look like the same action. The dark social guide covers the caption and DM link, which people copy and paste without scanning anything.
Design, size, and contrast for print are in QR code design for offline ads and QR codes versus vanity URLs. The offline UTM pattern is in UTM codes for offline.
How do you tie a scan to closed revenue?
The scan is a visit. Revenue starts when that visit becomes a lead you can see.
The form needs utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, and utm_content on the submission. Trakt forms include those, plus term and id, filled by the tracking snippet. The form scanner picks up forms already on the site. A form that ignores the URL produces a lead with no booth and no creator on it, which is the same outcome as having no code at all.
Someone who scans at a booth and requests a demo three days later on a laptop is a second visit. The QR code named the phone session. It does not follow them to the other machine. Tracking TikTok campaigns across devices is the piece that covers that gap. What the code does reliably is name the scan that happened on the phone in front of the code.
Before you print a run, do the path yourself: scan, submit, open the lead, confirm utm_content. Then brief whoever follows up, so the reply can mention the event or the video. A sourced lead that gets a generic email wastes the code.
The cluster this sits in starts with the TikTok attribution playbook. Hashtag campaigns that also use a printed code are in TikTok hashtag tracking.
If you want the tagged link and the QR from the same place, pre-register for Trakt. You build the link from the account's names, then make the code from that link.
Questions
How do I make a QR code for TikTok?
For your profile, open TikTok, tap Profile, tap the Menu button, then tap My QR code. For a code you can attribute, build a URL on your site with utm_source=tiktok, utm_medium=qr, a campaign, and a content value for that code, then generate the QR from that full URL. Scan it and submit a test lead before you print.
Does TikTok's profile QR code track scans?
It opens your profile. TikTok's sharing help describes the scan path and does not give that code UTM parameters. Use it to send people to the account. Use a code you generate from a tagged URL when you need the scan on a lead.
What UTMs should a TikTok QR code use?
utm_source=tiktok, utm_medium=qr, utm_campaign for the effort, and utm_content for the specific code: the booth, the creator, or the video. Add the parameters before you generate the image. A new parameter means a new code.
Why is TikTok QR traffic showing as direct?
The usual causes are a destination with no UTMs, a short link that drops the query string, or a form that does not store the parameters. Scan the code, read the final address bar, and submit the form. The lead should show utm_medium=qr. A person who later types your domain on another device will still look direct. That visit never had the code.
How many QR codes should one TikTok campaign have?
One per thing you will compare. One per creator, one per city, or one per video. A single code for the whole campaign tells you the campaign was scanned. It does not tell you which placement to fund again.
